Why the enneagram

Self-awareness is one of the most powerful catalysts for growth available to us — and one of the most difficult to cultivate. Our habits, reactions, and patterns of thinking often operate beneath conscious awareness, quietly shaping how we lead, relate, and make decisions without our ever noticing.

The Enneagram changes that.

Unlike other personality frameworks that describe what we do, the Enneagram goes deeper, revealing why we do it. It identifies the core motivations, drives, and blind spots beneath our behavior, offering a precise and remarkably accurate map of inner character. Where other models describe behavioral tendencies that can shift depending on context, the Enneagram identifies the internal drives that remain constant regardless of circumstance. It doesn't just tell you who you are. It shows you why and where you can grow.

As awareness deepens, something shifts. Judgments soften into curiosity. Compulsions begin to yield to compassion, for ourselves and for those around us. That is not a small thing. It is, we believe, the foundation of meaningful change.

About the Enneagram

The word "Enneagram" comes from the Greek — ennea meaning nine, gramma meaning drawing. Represented by a nine-pointed symbol within a circle, it identifies nine primary personality types and twenty-seven subtypes, each shaped by deep-rooted patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting.

Rooted in diverse spiritual and philosophical traditions and evolving over centuries, the Enneagram is at once a psychological tool, a spiritual map, and a somatic framework — addressing the whole person rather than just their behavior.

Each type has its own core motivations, patterns, and way of seeing the world. No type is better or worse than another. What changes, as awareness deepens, is how freely and consciously we move within our type — recognizing our automatic patterns and opening the door to genuine growth.

Why it Matters

The Enneagram is expanding rapidly across organizations, leadership programs, and personal development communities worldwide, and for good reason. It works. Not as a quick fix, but as a serious, layered tool that continues to deepen as you change and grow.

For individuals, the Enneagram offers a clear view of the motivations and patterns that shape how you lead, relate, and respond under pressure. Self-awareness is the single quality that most consistently distinguishes effective leaders, and the Enneagram is one of the most direct and honest paths to developing it. Knowing your type is not a free pass for existing behavior. It is an invitation to grow into your best self.

For organizations, the Enneagram operates at every level — individual, team, and organizational. Teams that understand the Enneagram together build more trust, communicate more effectively, and make better decisions because they have learned to see both what perspectives are present and what may be missing.

At Enneagram South, we bring this tool to individuals and organizations across Alabama and the South, meeting you where you are and helping you put the Enneagram to work in ways that are practical, meaningful, and lasting.
